ENERGY LEVELS IN CHROMIUM ISOTOPES

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4280633
A magnetic spectrograph with photographic detection was used to study tae proton groups emitted from deuteron interactions with a thin chromium target. Applying deuterons of energy 8.67 Mev, nine well deflned proton groups attributed to the isotope 52 of chromium yield Q values of 5.73, 5.16, 4.72, 3.41, 3.04, 2.11, 1.60, 1.50, and 1.09 Mev with errors of plus or minus 0.02 Mev. Four weak groups of protons having B values of 6.68, 6.26, 4.89, and 4.46 Mev with errors of plus or minus 0.64 Mev may belong to the Cr/sup 53/(d,p)Cr/sup 54/ reaction. In view of the present energy levels in Cr/sup 53/ and Cr/sup 54/, interpretation of some gamma groups emitted from previous work on neutron capture of chromium is given. The angular distributions for the proton groups corresponding to the transition to the ground state and five low-lying levels in Cr/sup 54/ are compared with theoretical curves based on deuteron stripping mechanism. Odd parity is identified to all the examined energy levels, and information about their possible spins, relative capture probabilities, and relative reduced widths is obtained. (auth)
