The formation of colloidal plutonium(IV) hydroxide from plutonium(IV) nitrate solutions was determined as a function of acid and plutonium concentration at several temperatures. Hydrolysis, polymerization, and precipitation take place in unstable solutions with a resulting increase in acidity to a concentration sufficient for a stable true solution. Except for colloidal sols formed from solutions of a few grams per liter, the acidities become too high for the plutonium to remain as a stable colloid.
