Cofiring wood waste in utility boilers: Results of parametric testing and engineering evaluations
- Foster Wheeler Environmental Corp., Sacramento, CA (United States)
Numerous utilities have pursued cofiring of biofuels with coal in cyclone and PC boilers. Foster Wheeler Environmental Corporation, under contract to the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), has conducted parametric tests and engineering evaluations of cofiring wood waste with both eastern and western coal in cyclone and pulverized coal (PC) boilers. The tests, and the engineering evaluations, have evaluated the impact of cofiring at levels up to 20 percent wood waste with eastern or western coal; in some parametric cofiring tests, wood waste was trifired with coal and tire-derived fuel (TDF). The results of both the tests and the engineering studies have included the influence of cofiring on boiler capacity, efficiency, and emissions such as oxides of nitrogen (NO{sub x}) and sulfur dioxide (SO{sub 2}). In the case of cyclone cofiring, parametric tests have indicated some significant potential for reducing airborne emissions as a consequence of manipulating the combustion mechanism. This paper reviews the results of testing at the Allen Fossil Plant of Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) and the Shawville Generating Station of GPU/Penelec. It reviews test results in PC and cyclone boilers with respect to capacity, efficiency, and emissions; and it identifies issues to be addressed by utilities considering cofiring wood waste with coal. The paper focuses upon the results of these tests in the context of cofiring test experience. Finally, the paper considers some of the parameters that emerge from cofiring engineering analyses and test programs, and overviews some of the ongoing programs in cofiring.
