This paper presents the project goals and evaluations along with the operating results of the Low NO{sub x}/Powder River Basin (PRB) fuel conversion at Northern Indiana Public Service Company`s (NIPSCO), Schahfer unit 15,500 MW boiler. In adherence to the New Source Performance Standards (NSPS), the original firing equipment produced NO{sub x} emissions slightly below 0.70 lb/MMBtu burning Bituminous coal with overfire air. The overall objectives were to burn cost effective PRB coal at NO{sub x} emissions below 0.45 lb/MMBtu while maximizing boiler performance. Working closely with NIPSCO, Foster Wheeler Energy Corporation (FWEC) designed and supplied the necessary Low NO{sub x} burners and pressure parts modification to enable PRB coal firing on this unit. Post-retrofit NO{sub x} emissions, without overfire air, are consistently below 0.35 lb/MMBtu with repeatable loss of ignition performance below 1%. The pressure part modifications met NIPSCO`s boiler performance requirements, with successful unit operation above 90% MCR.
