Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4277988
An investigation was initiated to determine thc hydrogcn pickup behavior of Zircaloy-2 during aqueous corrosion to determine whcthcr the removal of Ni from Zircaloy-2 would result in a reduction in the:imount of hydrogen pickup and to evaluate the- eorrosion behavior of Ni-frcc Zircaloy-2 in high-tcmpcriiturc watcr ofind steam. An investigation is being conduetcd to determine thc effects of oxygen content varying from l00 to l0,000 ppm on the corrosion, mcchanical, transformation, and fabrication charactcristics of vacuum-melted Zircaloy2. An investigation was initiatcd to determine thc dcgree of contamination which would occur during welding of Zircaloy-2 with W, C, and Zr el. -trodes in air, in air with a He shield, and in a vacuum-tight box evacuted to 0.03 microns and back- filled with one atmospherc of Hc. Tensile test dath are reported for vacuum- meltcd Zircaloy-2 ingot strip at room tempcrature and 600 F. A study of the effects of machining variables on the corrosion rcsistofinee of Zircaloy-2 surfaees was conducted. The effcct of oxygen on the precipitation of ZrFe/sub 2/ in Zr- Fe-Sn ternary alloys was determined during studies of thc Sn- Fe- Zr ternary system with oxygen levels of 0.05, 0.l, find 0.l5%.
