LIFETIME MEASUREMENTS OF THE FIRST EXCITED STATES OF TL$sup 208$ AND Ra$sup 22$$sup 4$

Half-lives of (2.6 plus or minus 1.0) x 10-/sup 12/ sec for the 40 kev state of Tl/sup 208/ and (7.O plus or minus 1.0) x 10-/sup 10/ sec for the 85 kev state of Ra/sup 224 have been measured by the line shift method using extremely thin sources especially prepared for these measurements. The method has been checked by determining the latter half-life also from a delayed coincidence measurement, which gave (7.5 approximately 1.5) x 10-/sup 10/ sec in good agreement with the first value.
