Organic laser dyes in methyl modified silicate hosts have been found to have poor photo stability. This could be caused by the instability of either the laser dyes or the host materials themselves. To get a better understanding of the chemical reactions and the relationship between the thermal stability and the microstructures of the hybrid network, the methyl modified silicate materials were investigated by TGA, DTA, {sup 13}C and {sup 29}Si solid state NMR, FTIR, and AFM as a function of processing conditions. The structural stability is found to directly relate to the reaction and processing conditions and the results are discussed.
