Investigation of a reloading of BR-1 with fuel elements with variable diameter and finned magnox cladding is described. A thermal flux lncrease of 60% and fast flux increase of 45% were found. Thermal and nuclear considerations of this loadlng led to the recommendation of bars 2.34 cm diam. A mixed loadlng was also studled ln whlch the 120 central channels were loaded wlth the new fuel element and the 5211 channels with ordinary ones. This loading gave a thermal flux lncrease of 27.0% due to thc reduced fuel element diameter and the use of magnox. The gain in fast flux would be 18%. (T.R.H.)
