The seventh Materials Research Society symposium on Better Ceramics Through Chemistry was held April 8--12, 1996 in San Francisco, California. The symposium focused on organic-inorganic nanocomposites which are unique materials arising from the coupling of organic polymers or monomers with inorganic materials. The inorganic components are frequently produced in situ via sol-gel chemistry beginning with inorganic monomers. Sessions were devoted to chemical synthesis or intercalation, characterization and processing of hybrids, coatings, mechanical properties, controlled porosity materials, electrical and optical properties, and particulates and layered films. Eighty papers have been processed separately for inclusion on the data base.
