ASTR FAST NEUTRON SPECTRA

Technical Report ·
DOI:https://doi.org/10.2172/4276461· OSTI ID:4276461
Ilford E-2 emulsions were used to measure the fast neutron spectra of the ASTR for two shield configurations, for minimum side water shielding and maximum side water shielding. During the exposures from 105 deg to forward centerline the reactor was mounted in the an energy distribution similar to a flssion spectrum. The calculation shows that after several elastic colln-sions the neutron still has an appreciable probability to undergo a reaction, in spite of the energy degradation in the spectrum due to each collision. This degradation was calculated, taking into account the anisotropy of the collisions. The gain of the reactivity in a reactor was obtained after correcting these probabilities for please delete the above part of abstract starting with (an energy distrubtuion similar to a fission spectrum.) Nuclear Test Aircraft. The measured spectra are compared with those calculated by use of the moments method. (W.D.M.)
