The temperature dependence of current density was studied by means of the Eckart barrier in order to determine the importance of the tunnel effect in H/ sub 3/O/sup +/ and D/sub 3/O/sup +/ discharge. The dependence of activation energy on the width of the barrier at E/sub o/ = 1.6 erg was plotted, and the discharges H/sub 3/O/sup +/ (E/sub o/ = 1.6 x 10 /sup -12/ erg) and D/sub 3/O/sup +/ (E/sub o/ = 1.6 x 10/sup -12/ erg) were tabulated and analyzed. The density of the tunnel current'' is about 55% at T = 373 deg to 80% at T = 273 deg of the total current density for H/sup +/ and 30 to 50% for D/sup +/. Thus the tunnel effect in a real barrier is not smaller, but may be even larger, than in the equivalent Eckart barrier. (R.V.J.)
