THE REACTION OF ALUMINIUM CHLORIDE WITH LITHIUM BOROHYDRIDE

The synthesis of aluminum borohydride by the reaction between lithium borohydride and aluminum chloride seems to occur, ai least in pant, through the decomposition of very unstable, volatile intermediates. Attempts to isolate these intermediates in pure state were unsuccessful but by trapping intermediate fractions at low temperatures and destroying them with excess hydrogen chloride, it was possible to obtain analytical evidence consistent with the identification of the intermediate compounds as Al(BH/sub 4/)Cl/sub 2/ and Al(BH/sub 4/) /sub 4/ )/sub 2/Cl.
