Pauticle losses caused by scattering on residual gases were calculated with consideration of the betatron oscillation damping in rectangular vacuum cbambers. The importance of examining the problem in the four-dimensional phase space is stressed. An efficient method is proposed for estimating the magnitudes of particle losses in vacuum chambers of arbitrary sbape. (R.V.J.)
