ADIABATIC INVARIANCE TO ALL ORDERS

Journal Article · · Annals of Physics (New York) (U.S.)
Adiabatic invariance theorems are eetended to all orders in the slowness paranneter. The ccncept of adiahatic invariance to all orders is formulated precisely in Section L In Section h, a classical onedimensional nonlinear oscillator is treated. It is proved that the action integral eatenmed over a period of the instantaneous time independent problem is an adiahatic invariant to all orders. Section IH is devcted to the extension of the Boan-Fock quantum mechanical adiahatic theorem to al1 orders. The systems to which the prcof applies in all rigor are those which have a finite number of nondegenerate quantum states which do not cross in the prceess of adiahatic change. The proofs are hased on a systematic construction of the asymptotic expansion in the s1owness parameter of the statistical distribution function which describes an initinlly stationary ensemble of systems.
