IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO THE VACUUM MELTING OF HIGH-MELTING METALS AND ALLOYS BY MEANS OF AN ELECTRIC ARC

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4269670
Two vacuum arc furnaces which make their own consumable electrodes are described. In one, Zr or Ti powder is mechanically pressed in the top of a tube at 2 to 10 kg/cm/sup 2/. As the powder compact rod moves down toward the arc chamber, it is degassed by argon sweeping and by vacuum pumps. In the evacuated arc chamber it melts in an arc formed by current supplied from beow. The bottom of the water cooled arc chamber may lowered by a mechanism as the arc-melted ingot orms. The second furnace design differs from the irst in that prefabricated rods of Ti or Zr electrode ing and by vacuum pumps. In the evacuated arc chamber it melts in an arc formed by current supplied from below. The bottom of the water cooled arc chamber may be lowered by a mechanism as the arc-melted ingot forms. The second furnace design differs from the first in that prefabricated rods of Ti or Zr electrode are introduced into a tube at the top and are arc welded together in one chamber, then degassed and melted as before.
