The commercial success of the Natural Gas Vehicles (NGV) requires the availability of sensors to make critical measurements, such as mass flow, gas composition, temperature, pressure, moisture, density, engine load, strain, etc. Engine, engine control, compressor, and dispenser manufacturers and fueling station packagers were surveyed to determine sensor use and needs. Their general comments on needed sensor improvements, detailed sensor specifications, and sensor priorities are given. Exhaust oxygen, mass flow, and gas composition were identified as the sensors of most concern. Because they deal with issues unique to NGV technology, evaluation of sensor technologies was limited to gas composition sensors. Sensor of principal concern for this application included: (1) on-board, in-line, feed forward devices and (2) fueling station monitors. Through an extensive survey, a baseline of information on gas composition sensors and emerging technologies for the NGV community was developed.
