THE SINTERING OF URANIUM DIOXIDE

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4267051
Sintering of uranium dioxide was studied as a function of powder characteristics, compacting parameters, and sintering conditions such as temperature, furnace type, and sintering atmosphere. The importance of the prehistory of the powder is shown, and the different methods used for characterizing the powder are reviewed. The influence of the different parameters mentioned on different properties of the sintered pellets, such as pore shape, size, and distribution, crystal growth, and thermal conductivity, are discussed. Possible mechanisms of sintering are discussed. (auth)
