CLUSTERING EXPERIMENTS WITH ThO$sub 2$-UO*SUB $sub 2$ FUEL IN D$sub 2$O

The fuel, contained in 5/16-in. OD aluminum tubes, has a diameter of 0.23 in., a density of 8.4 gm/cm/sup 3/, and a Th to U/sup 235/ atom ratio of 25. The flrst phase of the clustering experiments related the cluster spaeing, rods per cluster, and buckling, to the bucklings for uniform systems. The critical water heights were observed for thirty configurations achieved by uniform stepwise removal of fuel pins from the periphery of the clusters. The effect of clustering was also investigated in a core arrangement suitable for the proposed D/sub 2/O operation of EBWR. (W.D.M.)
