BEHAVIOR OF SOLID TANTALUM ELECTROLYTIC CAPACITORS DURING EXPOSURE TO NUCLEAR RADIATION

Journal Article · · Nuclear Sci. and Eng.
OSTI ID:4265806

Tests were conducted at the Ford Nuclear Reactor to determine the radiation resistance of five types of solid tantalum electrolytic capacitors. All of the capacitors were of essentially standard construction, utilizing tantalum anodes, tantalum pentoxide dielectrics, and manganese dioxide electrolytes. Eighteen units of each type were tested. Parameters measured during the tests were capacitance, dissipation factor, and leakage resistance. The capacitors were irradiated to a total integrated fast neutron flux of about 4 x 10/sup 16/ neutrons/ cm/sup 2/. Data for the capacitors that were tested at rated voltages are summarized briefly.
