PHOTOFISSION IN HEAVY ELEMENTS

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4265013

Measurements of photofission cross sections for a number of heavy- element nuclides were made by counting, in an ionization chamber, the fission fragments from foils irradiated in the bremsstrahlung beam of the University of Saskatchewan betatron. Parameters describing the giant-resonance fission cross section sup 237/, Pu/sup 239/, and Am/sup 241/. The yields of fissions are compared with the yields of neutrons measured previously in the same laboratory and the relative probabilities of the reactions ( gamma ,f) and ( gamma ,n) are obtained as a function of energy in a second series of experiments the angular distribution of the fission fragments relative to the photon heam was measured as a function of energy. The nuclides U/sup 233/, U/sup 235/, Np/sup 237/, Pu/sup 239/, and Am/sup 241/ give an isotro pic distribution. The nuclides Th/sup 232/ and U/sup 238/ give an anisotropic distribution of the form 1 + alpha sin/sup 2/ theta , the degree of anisotropy being very large at low energies and falling rapidly with increasing energy. A mixture of 30% Th/sup 230/ and 70% Th/sup 232/ gave an angular distribution indistinguishable from that of pure Th/sup 232/. (auth)
