American National Standard ANSI/ANS-8.1-present and future
- Dept. of Energy, Idaho Falls, ID (United States)
The American National Standard for Nuclear Criticality Safety in Operations with Fissionable Materials Outside Reactors provides guidance for the prevention of criticality accidents in the handling, storing, processing, and transporting of fissionable material. Traditionally, American National Standards Institute/American Nuclear Society (ANSI/ANS)-8.1 has been considered the generic standard for criticality safety. It provides general guidance for nuclear criticality safety in administrative and technical areas and more specific guidance in the form of single-parameter limits and multiparameter controls. The intent of the standard is to provide guidance for good operating practices for the handling of fissionable materials. From past experiences, it is known that with the proper precautions in place, extensive operations involving these materials can be performed safely and economically.
