Title: THE ALLOY SYSTEMS URANIUM-TITANIUM, URANIUM-ZIRCONIUM AND URANIUM-TITANIUM- ZIRCONIUM

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4260120

Dilatometric, metallographic, x-ray, and hightemperature x-ray methods were employed in a study of the uranium --titanium, uranium --zirconium and uranium --titanium --zirconium alloy systems. The three metals are mutually soluble in one another in their high-temperature body-centered cubic forms, and about 900 deg C complete solid solubility exists. There is general agreement between published versions of the uranium --titanium phase diagram, but certain aspects of the uranium --zirconium system are still controversial. A compound ( xi ) whose homogeneity range embraces the compositions UZr/sub 2/ and UZr/sub 3/ is present in the latter system, and the form of diagram in this region has been established. High-temperature x-ray methods were used to confirm the diagram at the highuranium end. In the ternary system, the addition of less than 1 atomic per cent titanium causes the disappearance of the ( gamma /sub 1/ + gamma /sub 2/ ) miscibility gap present in the uranium --zirconium system. Although the U/sub 2/Ti compound has a narrow homogeneity range in the binary, it dissolves up to 7 atomic per cent zirconium at 650 deg C. The uranium --zirconium xi compound does not extend far into the ternary system, the solubility of titanium at 575 deg C being 3 atomic per cent. No ternary compounds have been detected. (auth)
