The authors present a study of lithium doping in La{sub 2}Cu{sub 1{minus}x}Li{sub x}O{sub 4} and La{sub 2{minus}y}Sr{sub y}Cu{sub 1{minus}x}Li{sub x}O{sub 4}. Structural, magnetic and transport data for both ceramic and single crystal samples will be discussed. Structurally, the effect of doping with Li is nearly identical to that of Sr so that the lattice constants of La{sub 2{minus}y}Sr{sub y}Cu{sub 1{minus}x}Li{sub x}O{sub 4} are a function of the hole count only and not of the individual amounts of Sr and/or Li present. While the antiferromagnetic ordering temperature in La{sub 2}CuO{sub 4} is rapidly suppressed on doping with Li (dT{sub N}/dx= 150K/%Li), the suppression of superconductivity in La{sub 2{minus}y}Sr{sub y}CuO{sub 4} is surprisingly weak (for y=0.15, dT{sub c}/dx= 4K/%Li). The authors also discuss La{sub 2}Cu{sub 0.5}Li{sub 0.5}O{sub 4} in which the Li ions form a superlattice and fully compensate the Cu spins, yielding a diamagnetic insulator.
