THE THERMAL NEUTRON ABSORPTION CROSS-SECTION OF $sup 240$Pu

Journal Article · · J. Inorg. & Nuclear Chem.
A measurement of the thermal neutron absorption cross section of Pu/sup 240/ has been made using the Oak Hidge Pile Oscillator. Enriched Pu/sup 240/ samples and almost isotopically pure Pu/sup 240/ samples were compared with gold standards. All samples were sufficientiy thin so as to offer negligibe self protection. the pu/sup 240/ was found to give a response per atom 2.94 times that of gold. Upon correcting for the non-(1/v) character of Pu/sup 240/ absorption, a value of 285 the J-57 engin 15 barns is computed for the 2200 m/ sec absorption cross section. The value of 314 the J-57 engin 30 barns calculated from the resonance parameters of Pu/sup 240/is in agreement with this measurement. (auth)
