STUDY OF SOME REACTIONS OF 15 MEV DEUTERONS WITH THE LITHIUM ISOTOPES (thesis). Technical Report No. XII
Metallic targets of enriched Li/sup 6/ and Li/sup 7/ were bomba rded with 15 Mev deuterons. The outgoing particles were magnetically analyzed and detectcd in nuclear emulsions or scintillation counters. Angular distributions for the following reactions were measured: Li/sup 6/(d,p)Li/sup 7*/ 4.6 and 7.46 Mev, Li/sup 7/ (d,p) Li/.sup 8*/ 2.28 Mev, Li /sup 7/(d,t)Li/sup 6* 3.57 Mev, Li/ sup 6/ (d,d') Li/sup 6*/ 2.19 Mev, Li (d, alpha )He/sup 4/g.s., Li/sup 6.(d,t)Li/ sup 5/ and Li/sup 6/ (d,He/sup 3/)He /sup 5/. No new levels were observed; upper limits on the cross sectiors of unobservcd levels are given. The results of the (d,p), (d,t)s and (d,He/sup 3/) reactions were compared with stripping theory and with the predictions of the shell model. The agreement is, in general, satisfactory. The Li/sup 6/(d,t) and Li/sup 6/(d,He/sup 3/) reactions produce a contious spectrum of outgoing particles at each angle. Thc angular distribution of the tritons (or He/sup / particles) is strongly peaked forward and can be fitted with Butler curves having l = l, r/.sub 0/ = 6f. The spectra at small angles show a peak corresponding to the Li/sup 5/ (or Hc/sup 5/) ground state, but at large angles thc peak disappears and thc spectra are constant. The shape of the spectra can be explained by the Butler formula if the energy dependence of the reduced width is thken into account. Thc form of this dependence can be deduced from the results of the nucleon-helium elastic scattering experiments. (auth)
