A STUDY OF METHODS FOR PREVENTION OF CHLORIDE STRESS CORROSION OF AUSTENITIC STAINLESS STEEL. Progress Report III. Memo Report 135

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4257426
Stainless steel is susceptible to stress corrosion when exposed to chloride bearing water. The cracking of nuclear naval vessel piping may result fromn bilge water splashing insulated piping, permeating the insulation and eventually contacting the pipe wall. This project is to investigate the occurrence of chloride stress corrosion of Type 304 pipe from thia action and to evaluate methods which will inhibit attack. A solution to the problem is being sought by experimental procedure and by a survey of industrial experience. (auth)
