Recent corrosion tests of Zircaloy 2 under heat transfer in water at pH 10.5, 280 deg C, were vitiated by rectification effects. Strips of the material were heated bv the passage of a large 50 cps alternating current, and this involved a voltage of about 12 v rms between the specimen and the wall of the apparatus. Corrosion was unexpectedly great, white oxide forming in less than 200 hr, and much hydrogen was taken up by the Zircaloy r.
