NUCLEAR MAGNETIC RESONANCE IN SILVER-CADMIUM

Journal Article · · Phil. Mag.
Nuclear magnetic resonance shifts and line widths have been measured in alloys of silver and cadmium at 300 K in a field of 4200 gauss. The resonances of Ag/sup 109/ and Ag/sup 107/ nuclei were observed in the alpha and 6 wt.% Ru-U all phases and those of Cd/sup 113/ and Cd/sup 111/ nuclei in all the room temperature phases. In primary solutions of cadmium in silver, the Knight shifts of all the resonances decrease linearly as the cadmium content increases, the total variation being about 14% of their values at the center of the phase range. It is shown that in a disordered alloy a contribution to nuclear magnetic resonance line width can arise from the variations of the shifts of nuclei with their immediate surroundings. The results suggest that in alpha silver-cadmium alloys, the influence of the cadmium atoms on the shift of silver nuclei is confined to nearest and next nearest neighbors. Line widths in the 6 wt.% Ru-U all phase suggest an ordered structure. The relation of nuclear magnetic resonance shifts to the density of states at the Fermi surface is discussed and a calculation of the variation of this quantity with composition made from the Knight shift results. The result is compared with other experimental and theoretical evidence. (auth)
