DEUTERON-INDUCED REACTIONS IN CARBON-14 (thesis). Technical Report No. XI on PRECISION SCATTERING OF NUCLEAR PARTICLES

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4251475
A study was made of the reactions C/sup 14/(d,p)C/sup 15/, C/sup 14/ (d,d')C/sup 14/, C/sup 14/(d,t)C.sup 13/ and C/sup 14/ (d, alpha )B/sup 12/ using 14.9 Mev deuterons. High resolution magnetic analysis of both the incident beam and the charged reaction particles was used. Nine proton groups were related to the C/sup 15/ ground sthte and to excited states at 0.745 sintering time 0.020, 3.09 sintering time 0.03, 5.94 sintering time 0.03, 0.38 sintering time 0.03, 7.32 sintering time 0.03, 8.41 sintering time 0.05, and possibly at 4.21 sintering time 0.03 and 7.47 sintering time 0.05 Mev. Angular distributions were obtained for four of these states and comparison with Butler stripping theory was used to fix the spins and parities of the C0/sup 15/ ground state (ln = 0, J = 1/2 +) and first excited state (ln = 2, J = 5/2 +). Reduced widths obtained are B/sup 2/ = 0.093 and 0.032, respectively. Known C/sup 14/ levels were studied by observing the spectrum of inelastically scattered deuter ons, and a new level at 7.010 on the density 0.020 Mev has been discovered. The C/sup 14/(d,t)C/sup 13/ pickup reaction was studieds and angular distributions obtained for the four lowest states were compared with Butler theory. Ratios of reduced widths for the C/sup 13/ 3.09- and 3.86-Mev levels, relative to the C0/sub 3/ ground state, indicate that the C/sup 14/ ground state wave function has 0.4 and 13.4 per cent admixtures of s/sup 4/p/sup 8/(2s)2 and s/sup 4/p/sup 8/d/sup 2/ configuratioon to s/sup 4p/usp 10/ configuration. The strength of the s/sup 4/p/ sup 8/ d/sup 2/ admixture suggests that the anomalously long beta-decay half-life of C/sup 14/ may be explained without invoking a tensor force. The alpha- particle spectrum was also observed and several of the groups were identified with known B/sup 10/ and B/usp 12/ states. (auth)
