Title: STABILITY OF A CABLE-MOORED AIRSHIP

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4250827

Equations of motion for the longitudinal and directional stability of a cable-moored airship were analyzed on an analog computer by subjecting the configuration to a horizontals ramp-type gust and observing the induced motion. The results indicate that the proposed configuration is dynamically stable (overdamped, essentially), and that it possesses a sufficiently high degree of stability to permit a 20-percent reduction in the fin planform area governing stability in the longitudinal direction. However, this reduction cannot be accomplished by decreasing the appropriate area of the proposed three-fintail because such a decrease causes the airship to become directionally unstable. Aerodynamically, the desired area reduction can best be effected by the use of a four-fin tail. Motions are calculated for various modifications to the proposed configuration. (auth)
