Title: STUDY OF THE MECHANISM OF FAILURE OF ROCKET MATERIALS. Period covered : February 1, 1957 to January 31, 1958

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4249815

Twenty-five different materials were evaluated as nozzle inserts in rocket motors utilizing typical solid propellants. Evaluation of each material eonsisted of its exposure to the high temperature sonic gas flow of solid propellant engines under eonditions of high internal chamber pressure for relatively short periods. Some of the nozzle materials were incorporated in subsequent trials ai various combinations of chamber pressure and duration. Unfired and fired nozzles were examined, utilizing x-ray diffraction, microscopic, chemical, mctallographics and other analytical techniques. Wear parameter data, shadowgraphs, and macrophotographs are presented. (auth)
