NUCLEAR ABSORPTION CROSS SECTIONS FOR 3.6 BEV NEUTRONS

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4249498
The absorpiion cross section for Pb, Cu, and Al were measured by means of poor geometry transmission mesurements. The neutrons were produced by bomburding a 1-in. thick polyethylene target with 6.2-Bev protons in the Bevatron. Neutron detection was accomplished by measuring the density of stars in nuclear emulsion. These measurements gave for the absorption cross sections for Pb, Cu, and Al: 1930 plus or minus 300, 704 plus or minus 140, and 430 plus or minus 56 mb. An absorption mean free path in emulsion of lambda = 50 plus or minus 10 cm was obtained. The source strength of the neutrons was calculated to be 0.19 neutron/steradian/proton striking the target. By comparing the multiplicity of mesons produced in nucIear interactions by the reutron beam and by protons of known energy the average energy of 3.6 plus or minus 0.7 Bev was obtained for the reutron beam.
