THE DETERMINATION OF IRON IN THORITE

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4247138

A solution of the sample is obtained by fusion with potassium hydrogen fluoride and then pptassium hydrogen sulfate, the cooled melt being leached with dilute nitric acid. The iron is precipitated from alkaline tartrate solution with ammonium sulfide. The ferrous sulfide is separated and dissolved by oxidation in sulfuric acid. The iron is precipitated as hydroxide, separated. and dissolved in hydrochloric acid. The determination is made by reduction with stannous chloride and following the addition of mercuric chloride, titration with standard potassium dichromate solution. The method is suitable for iron contents of 0.2% upwards. (auth)
