MEASUREMENT OF THE ABSORPTION LENGTH OF PENETRATING SHOWER PRODUCING COSMIC RAY PARTICLES IN LEAD

Journal Article · · Nuclear Phys.
The absorption length of penetrating shower producing particles was measured in lead under great absorber thicknesses by means of a penetrating shower detector. In order to select single nuclear active particles, local penetrating showers were detected, and the coincidence rates measured were corrected for spurious effects. The absorption length was found to be 414 plus or minus 17 g/cm/sup 2/, in good agreement with the results of other experiments. The mean energy of the recorded penetrating shower producing particles was estimated to be between 30 and 60 Bev. (auth)
