Massive specimens of UC were prepared by arc melting and drop casting. Physical property measurements of the unirradiated material included hardness, density, electrical resistivity, thermal conductivity, linear expansion, modulus of elasticity, and compatibility with NaK and stainless steel. One group of specimens was irradiated in the MTR to a burnup of 1400 Mwd/ton. Swelling was found to be in the range of 0.66 to 2.53%. Fission recoil from the surface of the specimens could account for the observed gas release.
