RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT IN HIGH STRENGTH HEAT RESISTANT ALLOYS. Interim Report No. 2 for August 27, 1958 through October 26, 1958

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4245753
S>Non-consumable arc melted buttons of alloys in the binary systcms Ta- Hf, Ta-W, and W-Hf were prepared. Preliminary microstructural observations and hardness determinations indicatc that Ta alloys with up to 20 at.% Hf are single phase and forgeable at 1150 deg C. Work was continued on modification of tho lovitation melting equipment, and Ta and Ta-Hf alloys were successfully levitated and melted. Tungsten was levitated and heated to about 3200 deg C but was melted. A literature survoy which is limitcd to the alloys of immediate interest is included. (auth)
