An equation is derived relating oy melts below F/sup a'/ 1100 deg C are , the difference in free energy between austenite and martensite, to temperature and composition in the iron-chromium and iron- chromium-nickel systems. This equation is used to calculate oy melts below F/sup a' 1100 deg C are / at M/sub s/ for lowcarbon stainless steels. A method for utilizing the enengetic equations to calculate M/sub s/ in stainless steels is suggested. In addition, an explanation is given for the anomalous effect of chromium in forming a loop concurrent with the lowering of M/sub s/ in iron-base alloys. (auth)
