ON THE RESPONSE OF A SINGLE LARGE SCINTILLATOR TO EXTENSIVE AIR SHOWERS

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4244395
Good experimental evidence of the lateral structure of extensive: air showers has become available together with theory that correctly predicts the observed distribution. Improved techniques in the manufacturec of photomultiplier tubes has made it possible to construct scintlliators of very large acceptance area. These circumstances have suggested the possibility of investigating the behavior of extensive air showers using but a single scintillator in place of many smaller ones. An investigation was made in an effort to predict, applying the known properties of extensive air showers, the response of such a scintillator. (A C.)
