The feasibility of substituting stainless steel for Al will soon be investigated at the ORNL Bulk Shielding Facility with a new UO2-stainless steel core (BSR-II) now being fabricated. Deviations from the usual swimming pool design are discussed. Computations indicate that 6.02 kg of U235 will be required for the cold, clean critical mass. The control mechanism was investigated. A proposed series of tests in the SPERT-I Test Facility is described.
