REACTION MECHANISM IN INELASTIC SCATTERING OF PROTONS FROM Mg, Cr, AND OTHER ELEMENTS FROM 3.5 TO 7 Mev

Journal Article · · Physical Review (U.S.) Superseded in part by Phys. Rev. A, Phys. Rev. B: Solid State, Phys. Rev. C, and Phys. Rev. D
The angular distributions of the charged particles from th N/sup 14/ (d,d)N/sup 14/, N/sup 14(d, alpha /sub 0/)/c/sup 12/,N/sup 14/(d, a/sub 1/)C/sup 12*/, and deuteron bombarding energy of 21 Mev. The charged-particle groups are identified, and their energy is measured by a dE/dX vs. E counter telescope. The N(d, alpha )C angular distributions and the O/sup 16/(d, alpha )N/sup 14/ angular distribution measured by Freemanile et al. have been compared with theoretical curves calculated from a simplified direct-intcraction model. The relative magnitudes of the experimentally determined cross sections have also been compared with theory. The results indicate that the O/sup 16/(d, alpha /sub 0/) reaction can be described by the compoundnucleus extreme, while the N (d, alpha /sub 1/) process appears to favor description by a direct-interactdon model. The remaining (d, alpha ) reactions are intermediate cases. (auth)
