A NEW DESIGN FOR A WATER-MODERATED, SUBCRITICAL REACTOR

Journal Article · · Nuclear Sci. and Eng.
OSTI ID:4236872

The Columbia University variable-lattice, subcritical assembly is a natural-uranium, water-moderated reactor designed for teaching the principles of nuclear physics and engineering, and for graduate research. The distinguishing feature of this assembly is a lattice whose spacing is continuously variable between an upper limit (fixed by vessel size) and a lower limit (fixed by fuel- tube size). The design and physical arrangement are discussed. Preliminary results indicate that the optimum moderator-to-fuel ratio for the hollow, Savananah River-type fuel slug is approximately 2:1. (W.D.M.)
