The slowing down of neutrons in an infinite homogeneous medium is studied. The investigation is based on the discussion of the integral equations obeyed by a characteristic differential quantity which is the average number of collisions a neutron undergoes in an infinitesimal interval of lethargy. The slowing down process without capture is considered in this first part. (auth)
