The operation of a thermionic cell in which an ionized cesium gas fills the space between anode and cathode is described, establishing the fessibility of converting heat from fissioning material directly into electricity. The ''plasma thermocouple'' operating in the core of a reactor generated closed circuit currents as high as 35 amperes and open-circuit voltage of 3.5 volts, indicating a power output of 30 watts.
