Experimental studies were carried out on the melting and fabrication of low purity reactor grade zirconium, high purity reactor grade zirconium, Zircaloy- 2, and commercial zirconium. Sound ingots were obtained and it was recognized that hot workability (forging and rolling) was good. Effects of cold rolling, anneallng temperature, time, atmosphere, and cooling rate on the mechanical properties of the respective materials were discussed and optimum rolling and annealing procedures were established. Recrystallization diagrams are given and grain growth characteristics are compared with those of other materials. It was found that VHN measured at the surface is higher than VHN in the section. The difference was found to increase with cold rolling. (auth)
