EVALUATION OF ZIRCALOY-CLAD U-2 w/o Zr ALLOY TUBE NO. 32, EXTRUSION NO. 18392
The evaluation data presented in this report show that Tube No. 32 meets irradiation specifications in sll characteristics except maximum clad thickness in taper regions (+0.5 mil OD, and +1.3 mils ID out of specification which restricts taper clad thickness to 16 mils maximum) and final straightness (1/16 inch out of specification which restricts the maximum bow to 1/8 inch). Although no sharply defined pits or scratches deeper than 2 mils were observed, some smoothly contoured depressions less than 3 mils deep were found. If the cladding thickness does not follow the contour of the depression, but is actually decreased by an amount equal to the depth of the depression, the maximum clad thickness is at least 11.4 mils. This value, although 0.6 mil below the minimum specification for normal cladding, is still 1.4 nails above the minimum specification for the thickness of cladding remaining below pits or scratches (10 mils). None of the above deviations from specification are considered serious by du Pont. Tube No. 32 is representative of a lot of nine tubes and is considered suitable for irradiation at Savannah River.
