The outer shell of metal and/or refractory construction is set in concrete, and it has openings for admitting coolant, admitting core vessel, and loading and unloading reflector pellets. Coolant gas flows up through reflector and down through core. The refractories may be BeO. Fertile material may be incorporated for breeding. (T.R.H.)
