EXPERIMENTAL EVIDENCE FOR D WAVES IN $pi$$sup -$-p SCATTERING AT 370 AND 427 Mev
The total elastic cross sections for pi /sup -/-p scattering are 10.8 plus or minus 0.2mb at 370 Mev and 13.00 plus or minus 0.34 mb at 427 Mev. The zero-degree differential cross sections obtained by extrapolation best fit data to O/sup 0/ and using only S- and Pwave contributions (n = 2) are 1.38 plus or minus 0.23 mb/sterad at 370 Mev and 1.78 plus or minus 0.55 mb/sterad at 427 Mev. The probabilities that the experimental data are consistent with the fits based on S and P waves alone is less than 1% which shows that the inclusion of D waves is necessary to obtain a reasonable fit to the data. It is concluded that D waves are present and F waves may be present, especially at 427 Mev. (C.J.G.)
