REACTIONS OF 378 MEV PROTONS WITH ARSENIC (thesis)
Targets of arsenic metal or arsenic compounds were bombarded with 375- Mev protons in the circulating beam of the Nevis cyclotron. Following cbemical separation of the products into elemental tactions from potassium to selenium, the relative yields of more than 60 radioisotopes were determined by absoluts beta and xray proportional counting. The absolute cross sections for forming several of these products were measured by comparison of their formation rates with the formation rats of Na/sup 24/ from Al in a target containing a known ratio of arsenic to aluminum atoms. The total inelastic cross section of arsenic (including interpolated values) is estimated to be 87O plus or minus l8O mb. (auth) l6464 A Sm/sup152/ target made by electromagnetic isotope separation was bombarded with 7.5 to 8.5 Mev deutorons and 8.6 Mev protons. Inelastic scattered groups corresponding to Coulomb excitation of the level at 122 kev were deuterons Coulomb excitation of levels at 807 kev and lO79 Bev was seen. The reduced transition probabilities for the two highest excited states are several times the single particle values, indicating the collective nature of both of these states. These levels are interpreted as beta- and gamma-vibrational states. The partial lifetime and the nuclear strength parameter for the EOtransition between the 807 kev and the 122 kev levels were calculated and found to be in agreement with the theoretical values.
