CRITICAL OBSERVATIONS ON THE ESTIMATION OF THE RADIOACTIVE POISONING ON THE BASIS OF TOTAL ACTIVITY MEASUREMENTS (in German)

As a result of the analysis of the fission product mixture from nuclear warfare research, it is shown that the total activity measurements in rain and drinking water and their evaluation at a maximum permissible concentration for isotopic mixtures of unknown composition (10/sup -8/ mu c/ml) lead to a considerable over estimation of the radiation drunger. Determinations of Sr/sup 90/, Sr/sup 89/, Ba/sup 140/, I/sup 140/, and the total activity in rain water and snow from July 1956 to July 1957 confirm this interpretation. Whereas the total activity measured was one hundred times the permissible level, the hazardous isotope Sr/sup 90/ reached 95% and Sr/sup 89/, Ba/sup 140/, and I/sup 131/ are <1% of the permissible concentration. For the natural radioisotopes RaD (Pb/sup 210/) and Ra/sup 226/ 1 to 3% of the permissible concentration was observed. Altogether the activities over the time studied were total activity 490, Sr/sup 90/ 2.1, Sr/sup 89/ 27, Ba/sup 140/ 28, I/sup 131/ 14, and RaD 1.1 mc/ km/ sup 2/. A comparison of the composition found with that expected from the age of the mixture shows that Sr/sup 90/ is in high excess, whereas the quotu of the other isotopes detected correspond to the value expected. From an analysis of the constituents, it was found that 85% of the Sr/sup90/ precipitated comes from the stratosphers. The fall-out of the stratospheric Sr/sup 90/ varies with the time of the year, with a maximum in the summer months. (tr-auth)
