Given the time people spend in and around buildings, understanding the impact of building exhaust gases upon surrounding air quality is an extremely important aspect of air toxics in the environment. Because of the potentially hazardous nature of chemicals used in many laboratory buildings, it is essential to predict building exhaust dilution in terms of exposure to both time-averaged concentrations as well as to the instantaneous peak concentration. While there is a modest history of the development of exhaust dilution models for time averaged dispersion, peak instantaneous concentrations have not been treated in building dilution models. Indeed, there appear to be essentially no measurements reported of instantaneous concentration fluctuations within the influence of building dispersion. This paper reports measured exhaust dilution rates for laboratory fume hood vents on a building in an industrial laboratory complex. Field data are reported from a series of sulfur hexafluoride (SF{sub 6}) tracer releases from several rooftop vents and fume hood stacks. Tracer concentrations were measured at rooftop fresh air intakes and at ground level using time-averaged syringe samplers and a continuous SF{sub 6} analyzer. These data are valuable for the evaluation of current building exhaust dilution models and as a first look at the nature of concentration fluctuations in the immediate vicinity of buildings.
